Photos from my recent trip to the Grand Canyon, starting with some from the drive from Phoenix. We took the scenic route through Sedona.
An expanse of low growing bushes and grasses in the foreground, mountains in the midground, and a bright blue sky with white clouds in the background. On the right, a waist-high bush, bare sticks except for fluffy seed pods that were released with each gust of wind. Grey rock covered in dark brown, sage green, and bright yellow lichen. Life finds a way. Red-brown hill rises up, with trees close to the ground, followed by spare green brush farther up. At the top there are several peaks of bare rock. Even sitting in traffic the views were spectacular. Taken from the passenger seat of a car on a four lane highway. The road ahead is full of cars, but in the mid-ground a mountain range of red and grey rocks under a blue sky streaked with white clouds.

Part of the problem is that it's much easier to run this with hate and fear. Hope and unity have to be marketed differently.

The sudden change in color of the rock part way down the canyon, from a light brown to a deep red-brown. Pictographs, mostly deer, in red on the pale rocks just beyond the first tunnel on Bright Angel Trail.

You don't need to go far down into the Canyon to get a whole different perspective.

I'm not a geologist, but there are some pretty great rocks in the desert. (Did I mention it used to be an ocean?) #fossil
Two small rocks, one light brown and one a dusty pink, sitting on top of a yellow-brown boulder that lines the Bright Angel Trail. A tiny bed of moss, no more than two inches long, shelters in a boulder along the Bright Angel trail. Life is tenacious. The rocks of the canyon rise up from the trail. In the middle of the photo the mules and their tourist riders are lined up to give the mules a rest on their way up the trail, while the Ranger gives some history of the trail. A broken shell fossil embedded in a boulder, with layers of sediment inside.

Views from Bright Angel Trail. It is theoretically possible to take bad pictures of the Grand Canyon, but it's so easy to take pretty ones instead.

At the 1.5 mile rest house of the Bright Angel Trail. I did not approach the wildlife.

Things you should not have to be told.

Traveling companions.
Two tall young men stand near the edge of an outcropping along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Their favorite part of the trip was getting as close to the edge as possible to see how much anxiety they could cause in their poor mother. (Glorious layers of rock and sky also visible.) Someone took offense to the use of the word "prudent" here.
