I think where a lot of people fall flat is that they expect the apologist to stop. If their position is irrational, they have committed to irrationality, and that is actually fine. Our task is to prevent them from sneaking that irrationality into a rational conversation through the dialectic.

In the case of conversations about race/racism, most racists will attack the identity or motives of the interlocutor (“victim mentality” or “you just hate WP”) instead of addressing the argument/empirics.
