- Law enforcement believes the suspect acted alone and there’s no additional threat.

- If you were at the restaurant when the shooting happened or have any information, call the Southport PD at 910-457-7911. This is an active investigation and they’re looking for additional information.

- Around 10 pm, the Coast Guard detained the suspect. He’s now in custody and has been charged with 13 counts, including three counts of first degree murder. More charges may be coming while law enforcement continues investigating.

I’ve been in touch with law enforcement in Brunswick County and offered our office’s full support as they investigate last night’s shooting in Southport.

The investigation is ongoing, but here’s what we know now:

 - Three people were killed and several others injured around 9:30 pm last night.

This morning I joined a thousand people at UNC’s football stadium for a 9/11 stair climb led by UNC’s ROTC, where I was once a cadet.

Together we climbed roughly 2,000 steps in remembrance of the firefighters who ascended the towers that day.

My thanks to everyone who joined us for a great event.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk is despicable.

This cannot be the direction we’re going as a country. This downward spiral of violence must stop.

My prayers are with Charlie - for his life, his family, and his friends.

Breaking: Complete victory for western NC and AmeriCorps. The federal government has abandoned its unlawful attempt to defund the program.

We sued because the executive branch broke the law - and it knew it would lose. Great news for recovery efforts in western NC.

Hey FEMA - we need to talk about the $200m you owe us.

This is a big deal:

The NYTimes just saw one day of our work, but every day the team at NCDOJ brings that same focus and dedication to protecting North Carolinians. Grateful for their skill, integrity, and commitment to serving the people of our state.

The NYTimes joined me for a day at the office, sitting in on meetings and watching our work to fight threats like fentanyl and consumer scams. We talked about why the Attorney General must be a nonpartisan shield for the people - and why I don't do outrage politics: www.nytimes.com/2025/08/09/u...

Robocalls are out of control. North Carolina gets 200 million a month.

Most are illegal scams.

I'm upgrading our tactics to hit back harder, as 37 companies are finding out today.

Here’s how:

Breaking: The court just ruled that FEMA can’t spend NC’s $200m in disaster preparedness money elsewhere while our lawsuit against them plays out.

FEMA broke the law when it cut these funds for our water and sewer systems. We’re going to keep fighting to make sure this funding is restored.

A federal agency - which controls an enormous amount of money - is breaking the law to hide its decisions from you and avoid accountability.

Hey OMB, see you in court.

Breaking: The Department of Education has reversed course and is releasing all frozen funds – $6.8b nationally, $165m for North Carolina – after we filed suit last week.

This ends weeks of uncertainty. Our schools can now plan and hire for a strong year ahead.

Good news:

The Ed Department says it's giving states the after-school funding it unlawfully froze.

That’s about $36m of the $165m in education funding they froze for NC.

We'll see them in court for the rest.

My thanks to the 10 Republican senators who just asked the federal government to unfreeze billions in education funding.

They echo the case I’m making in court: that Congress created these programs, approved the plans, and now the funds must go to the students.

GOP senators urge Trump administration to reverse $6 billion education funding freeze
The letter, led by Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., is a rare rebuke by GOP senators of the Trump administration's education policies.

Breaking: We just filed suit to protect $165m in education funding in NC and prevent the layoff of roughly 1,000 educators right before the school year starts.

Her: "YOU were alive in the 1980's?!?!"

Me: "Yes."

Her: "Wow. What did your bike look like?"

Me: "Like yours."

Her [muttering to herself]: "Dang, that's amazing."

July 4th bike ride with Avery.

She says, "In the 1980's, did they have brakes on their bikes or did they have to stop with their feet?"

I said, "We had brakes."

Her: "How do you know?"

Me: "Because I was alive then."

Because we took action to defend the Constitution, North Carolinians still have their 14th Amendment right to citizenship. While this case has been sent back to a lower court for review, our position remains unchanged. The 14th Amendment is clear, and we will defend it. apnews.com/live/supreme...
Live updates: Supreme Court limits nationwide injunctions, but leaves fate of birthright citizenship unclear
The Supreme Court ruled that individual judges cannot grant nationwide injunctions, but the decision left the fate of birthright citizenship unclear under an order by President Donald Trump.

Heads up: Buried in a 1,000-page bill is a section that would freeze every state’s ability to enforce A.I. laws for the next 10 years.

That means no new protections from A.I. scams, deepfakes, or impersonation.

Bad idea.

I’m deeply proud of the attorneys in my office who fought to protect those votes - and won.

Congratulations to Justice Allison Riggs. The rule of law held. The will of the voters was upheld.

This attack didn’t work, but there’s a real risk that other losing candidates might try the same attack in the future.

We will always defend your right to vote - and the lawful outcomes of elections.
jeffjacksonnc.bsky.social
And it put tens of thousands of lawful votes at risk - including ballots from military servicemembers and long-time North Carolinians who followed the rules and voted lawfully.
jeffjacksonnc.bsky.social
But let’s be clear - this never should have happened.

There was no sound legal basis for trying to change the rules after the fact. From the beginning, it was an attempt to twist the law to reverse the outcome of a legitimate election.
