"Baseball" didn't ban Pete Rose from Hall of Fame election. The Hall of Fame itself (which isn't governed by MLB) enacted a rule barring those on MLB's permanently-ineligible list from appearing on any Hall of Fame ballot.

Andy Messersmith, and Dave McNally. But . . .

McNally went down with an injury that June, retired to his Montana auto dealerships, and agreed to join the grievance that August . . . only when Marvin Miller asked him as insurance in case Messersmith wavered.

Messersmith went the full distance.

One year? I give them six months. And that might be a generous give.

Goerge F. Will once called Murray Kempton the class of the columnist's class. The same applies to Mr. Will. He instructs, engages, provokes, and clarifies, in sentences worthy of the name "lyricism."

And he's also written three of the best baseball books you'll ever read while he's at it.

I thought there'd be no hell like the Long Island Distressway.

Then I got a gander of SoCal's 405, 605, 710, 110, and 5.

Suddenly I was nostalgic for the LID.

Told ya!

(Well, not you personally---but I saw that guitar on Day One and knew it was phony. I should know: I'm fortunate enough to own and play four beautiful Les Pauls. The REAL Les Pauls.)

That's even funnier than the old-time radio comedy gag (I happen to have it on a show in my collection), "Four out of five doctors have been surveyed," then flipped to "Four out of five surveys have been doctored."

Don't forget---baseball has also had a Kluttz, a Klutts, a Putz, a side of Veale, and a smear of Schmutz!

(In fairness, there are also five Churches and a Temple . . . )

Appropriate in one way: it's another ripoff of the Gibson Les Paul. Why do I think "ripoff" might be appropriate in this context?

Welcome home from the dark side, where the only darkness by which you should ever be embraced is a moonlit night.
