You can look to MASH, Stripes, Platoon, etc to catch that small window, post “holy shit, we napalmed civilians?!,” pre-muscular patriotism, where US might was viewed as cynical or buffoonery. A few of the 12 total years out of 250 where we weren’t engaged in military action.

I think that’s getting lost here. The “fucking bitch” comment after the murder confirms that this is actually a hate crime too, just as much as murdering someone with a “fucking n-word” or other derogatory term attached.
