"The biggest trouble I had was managing Sy at a newspaper that hated to be beaten but didn't really want to be first. The Times was scared to death of being first on a controversial story that challenged the credibility of the government."

I mean, I unequivocally love Eric Adams. Terrible politics but the man is basically perfect otherwise

Sliwa is totally nuts with bad politics, but in the same way Eric Adams was totally nuts with bad politics? It takes an incredible person to be Mayor (or want to be Mayor).

At least Sliwa is a cat guy

Many people will write about how cheap big TVs have become - but many TV screens (even smaller ones) produce better picture quality than theaters. Non-enthusiasts have *soundbars* that rival some theaters.

The home experience has been upgraded 10x or even 100x for many consumers

My mom used to string up two sets of lights on the tree and switch from white to color based on the night. Sundays in Advent? White. Christmas Eve? Colors.

I also loved the early episodes. I cannot get over how much it feels like Last Man on Earth (which was thoroughly enjoyable at its best moments)

I just don't understand the value of sending a breaking news alert about a 90 year old who died peacefully who hasn't been a public figure for 20 years.

I actually want breaking news alerts but I don't need a death watch on an actor who won an Oscar in the 1980s. (By my count, I haven't even heard of 25% of these people - certainly I'm not great at knowing everyone relevant, but...)

The vast majority were actors/musicians/athletes. Around 20% were politicians. The rest were authors/artists or people of note.

Generally speaking, all of these people should get an obituary as they are (or were) a big part of the culture.

This past off-season I came up with what I thought was a great homerun call to Castellanos: "...hit well and...somebody check on the Pope... that ball is gone!"

Too bad the Pope died in April
