i think maybe, MAYBE, pittsburgh could show leadership in defining what moral engagement could look like. i don't actually think it's good when government agencies won't work with each other, but what parameters should cities have about it? i don't know, maybe pittsburgh could lead the way!

top issues in city council in Pittsburgh -- personally, i think pittsburgh has been doing great at threading the needle in not contributing to cruelty toward immigrants while also not grandstanding with the sanctuary city label, but it's a topic of conversation!

on the one hand the debt limit is stupid, congress should have to fund whatever they decide to spend.

on the other, president trump isn’t following congressional spending orders anyway.

so, let the trumpdown continue until republicans stop breaking every rule to get whatever they want.

i think the democrats should only have one demand -- the president spends what congress directs him to spend. it doesn't solve every problem, but it does solve some. and, it's explainable -- why pass more spending if the president isn't going to spend according to the rules?

i know it's easy not to care any more, but google giving $22 million because they took his account off after he encouraged the january 6th riot is gross.

A great paper by @mlam.bsky.social -- Policy Map helps folks working with LLMs to deal with the huge space of decisions about how these systems should behave!

#3 paper at #uist2025, by @mlam.bsky.social from her Apple internship, on Policy Maps, which is a visualization tool to help map out the unbounded space of LLM behaviors

Wednesday, 11:24am in Miami

www.cs.cmu.edu/~jbigham/pub...
Policy maps chart LLM policy coverage over an unbounded space of model behaviors. Here, an AI practitioner is
designing a policy for how an LLM should summarize violent text. Policy map abstractions (right) allow the policy designer to
interactively author and test policies that govern a model’s behavior using if-then rules over concepts. The designer can create
any desired concept by providing a simple text definition to capture cases of model behavior. Our Policy Projector tool (center)
renders cases, concepts, and policies as visual map layers to aid iterative policy design.

#2 paper, paper by my student @yihaopeng.bsky.social, on Morae which is a web agent that is accessible to screen reader users, and also pauses when there are choices to be made

see a demo tonight/Monday, and the talk Wed 2:42pm, Sydney

www.cs.cmu.edu/~jbigham/pub...
Morae is an accessible user interface agent that proactively pauses automation at key decision points for blind and
low-vision users to make choices. For example, when asked to “buy the cheapest sweetened sparkling water”, existing agents
would automatically choose a product even if multiple items have identical prices. Instead, Morae pauses automation and
presents relevant product differences (e.g., flavors, ratings) and allows users to choose based on their preferences. By proactively
detecting and pausing when user input is necessary, Morae allow users to actively express preferences during UI automation.

Trump had his accounts suspended on January 7, 8, and 9th 2020. WHEN HE WAS STILL PRESIDENT. It was not Joe Biden because Biden was not President.

It says something about Trump’s all-out war on free speech that the New York Times couldn’t find a more credible person than “presidential historian” Craig Shirley to defend it. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/21/u...
Craig Shirley, a presidential historian and biographer of President Ronald Reagan, said Mr. Trump's experience was so searing that he did not believe the president would improperly restrain others' free speech, whatever his public exhortations.
"We all especially know Biden used government to censor Trump, kicking him off many media platforms, a clear violation of the law," Mr. Shirley said. "As his own First Amendment rights were abridged, my guess is he's especially sensitive to anyone else seeing their First Amendment rights taken away."

the stories are all "maybe the right is woke now", but it seems a lot worse than that --i don't recall liberal leaders bringing government power to bear against random critics. what was the closest to the head of the FCC putting pressure on ABC to fire kimmel?
