The team there is genuinely passionate about those games, it's not easy to maintain that many retro machines but they really put the work in.
I also heard they spend a ridiculous amount of money getting those custom tokens made, but insist on it for the charm.

Yea, it's kind of interesting because the central premise is kind of "what if final fantasy shit started happening in a western style mid/low fantasy world"
I have my own problems with the game, but I think the biggest is that it doesn't really explore that enough

I think FF16 is a weird example, and a bit less high-fantasy than a lot of others in the series (IX,X,XIII).
I think Clive being the super special most magic boy makes the plot shift into high fantasy by act 3, but the world itself feels more mundane.

Honestly my biggest problem with Horizon (especially the second one) is that Aloy spends so much time alone. That game would make so much sense with a companion system (including a dog)
