For me, it’s International Institute of New England. Tons of volunteer opportunities — help immigrants get jobs, learn the T, learn English, find community, survive, thrive. You can dive in, sponsor a family. Or give 2 hours occasionally. It all helps. There are orgs like that all over the country.

Smart move by two young upstate NY reporters: they filed a FOIA for body cameras worn by the sheriff’s deputies at an ICE raid. These are almost always civil raids so there’s no ongoing criminal investigation that would require that footage to stay confidential. Replicable by any media outlet.

Until this year, when I visited the Alamo museum in San Antonio, I did not know the Battle of the Alamo/broader Texas Revolution was explicitly spurred by Texians’ defiance of Mexico’s abolition of slavery.

Not exactly disagreeing but - the first movie I saw Leo in was This Boy’s Life and he blew me away. One of the few times I’ve seen a very young actor and thought “this kid will be a star”and been right. It’s the only movie I’ve ever really loved him in.

Always thought would be fun to have movie/novel purely on Clark from POV of rest of resentful newsroom - vanishes into phone booths for hours, sloppy source greasers on Superman, ties Jimmy up when he could be on other assignments, has weird effect on Lois, always wears dumb necktie. What an ass.

I sometimes sub apricots for plums in Marian Burros’ torte, also subbing ~1/4 cup cornmeal for some of the flour and ~1/4 cup olive oil for some of the butter and use about 1/2 cup sugar instead of a whole cup. Fast, easy, delicious, everyone likes it warm with vanilla ice cream.

One time I was new to Boston, left my book on my subway seat, asked a T worker on the platform if there was a lost & found, he radioed my train, a T guy found the book, handed it off to a train going the opposite direction and I had it back in like 3 min. (I too have trouble believing this story.)

Thief in the Botanical Gardens. Flowers are disappearing and the bunny garden keeper starts accusing all his friends. He’s obsessed. Then he rigs up a surveillance camera and SEES HIMSELF sleepwalking and night snacking on the flowers. He is his own villain! Incredibly disturbing to 5 year old me.

I saw that tour in Somerville, MA, two nights (one for each record), sold out in an old theater. Stephen Merritt commented midway through that the way the crowd knew each song so well that they waited until the very very end to cheer and clap was actually freaking him out. Truly unforgettable show.

Withholding fed funding has been used to incentivize states for ages tho right? 60s, civil rights/ed funds. 80s, drinking age/highway funds. Bush 2, No child left behind/ed funds etc. Scotus shot down Medicaid expansion/funds — & trump is well beyond that — but the practice predates race to top?
