I'm pleased to share that my REU student, Rain Bugado, was one of the winners of the 2025 Undergraduate Research Prize by the American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT) for her project on the conservation of Vellozia.

How does the specimens available online become well curated? Because the taxonomists go to these museums to analyse the real specimens and make the species identifications. I updated the Vellozia collection at the Missouri Botanical Garden's herbarium after one week of work.

Vellozia, one of the most diverse & abundant genus' within the Campos Rupestres, shows incredible levels of endemism. Here, past climate change was used to investigate the modern-day range of this iconic genus! A 🧵(1/3)

Vellozia is an iconic genus in the campos rupestres, a mountainous environment in the highlands of central-eastern Brazil. Under climate change, each species of Vellozia is expected to lose 84.26 % of its suitable habitat by 2060!

I love to see my dear plants on the field! I collected this beautiful Vellozia angustifolia in Pirenópolis, Goiás, Brazil. See how beautiful the Campos Rupestres are, where they occur!

#Annonaceae are experts at #flagelliflory. Here’s the evocatively named Duguetia cadaverica showing off a flagelliform inflorescence that grows along & through the leaf litter. The #beetle-pollinated flowers smell of death. 📷: Hervé Galliffet CC BY-NC 4 via iNaturalist. #Botany #PlantScience 🌾

I'm attending the 74° Brazilian National Conference of Botany in Brasília. Yesterday, I presented our recently published paper on the nomenclature of Vellozia, an endemic plant genus from the Neotropics 👇🏽
