One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.

Imagine if a Democratic politician said “a lot of people didn’t like him” with respect to that assassinated podcaster. Seriously.

I remember graduating from college, not being on my parents insurance, and having a job that didn’t have insurance. I just didn't see a doctor or a dentist for 5 years. Fortunately I was young and healthy! Now I have GREAT coverage. Not retiring until my youngest - who has health issues - turns 26.

Planet Money had an episode a while ago about ebooks from the library. I kind of worried using the library more than the bookstore before that. But authors, libraries, and ebook publishers have some sort of agreement. Authors do get compensated!
