Cake is the difference between a meeting and a party

I chose an image widely distributed by the abolitionist movement during the Civil War, showing the terrible scars on the back of Peter, a formerly enslaved man, 🧵

The clarity of her thesis - there was no source of brown sugar or molasses without the horrors of the sugar plantations - was deeply unsettling. Baked beans, molasses cookies, brown bread and other familiar New England foods depended on the forced labor of enslaved people. 🧵
