It's been 2 years (+ 1 month) since I left academia. In case anyone is wondering, I have zero regrets. Indeed, I'm living my best life and am so happy I made the leap.

If you're considering leaving too, here are some thoughts on how to explore your options/find a job you'll love...

Another day, another convo w an academic friend who is leaving their tenure-line position by choice. (This one is a full professor!)

Academics (especially women) are realizing the water outside the ivory tower is fine, and they don’t have to put up w insane nonsense anymore. 🥂

We have a long list of policy options to reduce crime, such as:

• Improving police staffing & presence
• Strengthening investigations & case clearances
• Better DNA collection & analysis
• Scaling summer youth employment programs
• & more…

Reach out to discuss what could work in your state or city

Looking for research funding? Arnold Ventures has several open RFPs. This includes a standing RFP for causal research related to US crime/the CJ system/ppl w criminal records.

First step is a 3-page LOI. We aim to get you a funding decision within 3 months of that first step.

If you’re on the academic job market this year, it’s a great time to submit proposals for external funding based on your JMP or other ongoing work. Make this your back-up plan! See thread below.

This year's Econ job market has, by all accounts, been brutal. If you're still not sure what you're doing next year, applying for external funding to continue your work is a great way to buy yourself time & options. It's a way to "build your own post-doc." Check out AV's open RFPs!

Back by popular demand! We just released another call for proposals using RCTs and quasi-experiments.

3-page LOIs are due March 14. Details here: bit.ly/4ambjv3

Finally Corrective Services in New South Wales is tremendously research- and data-driven. They asked me to spread the word that they’d love to partner with more external researchers to evaluate their policies and programs. So, consider this your invitation to get in touch with them. 🤓

Data availability is a primary constraint on learning how to improve the juvenile justice system in the US, so there is a big opportunity here for researchers to use Australian data to make important progress on this issue. Reach out to BOCSAR if you’d like to use their data!

I was particularly interested to learn that juvenile records are much more easily accessible to researchers in Australia than they are in the US.

In Australia, the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) has amazing administrative criminal justice data available to researchers, and is trying to spur more rigorous research on what works to reduce crime.

(Like Arnold Ventures, they are working to scale summer jobs programs, so we’ll be learning from each other there too.)

The Ending Youth Violence Lab in the UK is methodically piloting innovative solutions in a way that enables them to measure efficacy (often as RCTs). I’d love to see more orgs like this in the US, and am eager to see the results of EYV’s ongoing trials.
