Senior Conservation Scientist at the Canadian Conservation Institute. I use fabulous instrumentation to investigate 🎨 fine art, 🏛️museum objects and🗿archaeology. |🔥Py-GC-MS |🧵 dyes |👩‍🔬 chemistry |🔬 heritage science |
We discovered the rarest dye in the world on an Ancient Egyptian painted offering to Goddess Hathor!

Shellfish blue, also called Biblical blue and Tekhelet, has only been found a handful of times. This oldest intact example may show its religious importance in Egypt.

It’s pretty common for scientists to name their instruments. I’d like to introduce you to Henrietta Pepperpot! She’s 13, and has helped me uncover mysteries of 20 million year old amber, ancient Egyptian textiles, medieval paintings, and hunting tools from Yukon made over 8000 years ago.❤️ #science

Here’s a strange story.

Little more than a dozen years ago I analysed ink from the pens that were thought to have been used to sign the Canadian Proclamation of Constitution. I got to visit the red paint copy of the constitution at the Library and Archives and it was an honour! 🧵

Hi, I’m Jenny! 👋

I am a heritage scientist and I love what I do! Some of the best parts of my job are my colleagues, and learning everyday about natural and synthetic organic materials - how they degrade, and how to identify them. I’ll be posting about my work, textiles, my dog, and my hobbies.
