I think at that time it was among the cheapest controllers you could buy.

Also, the 8087 extends the 8086 instruction set, while the 9511 is an external device. The 9511 pre-dates the 8087 by a few years, so could've been an inspiration.

I was curious if it has anything in common with the 8087. I do have a replica of an FPU card for Apple II using it, but so far didn't have time to try it.

Have you ever looked at the AMD 9511? This was licensed by Intel as well and sold as Intel 8231.
