I am currently looking into owl hybrids, which involves diving into some grey literature. Look at this wonderful family: Eurasian Eagle-owl, Great Horned Owl and their offspring. 😀

Starting the week with an unexpected milestone. My Avian Hybrids website has been visited more than 500,000 times. 🤩
avianhybrids.wordpress.com

Although I don't really care about these statistics, it is nice to see some attention for avian hybridization and other #ornithology topics.

I hurt my ankle. So, I cannot go for long walks during the weekend. 😑 A good excuse to do some more reading.📚

I just finished "The Serengeti Rules" by Sean B. Carroll. A nice overview of molecular and ecological mechanisms, such as negative feedback and cascading effects.

Time for my yearly overview of the best books I read in 2025. 😃📚

- The Genetic Book of the Dead (Richard Dawkins)
- Behave (Robert Sapolsky)
- Birds, Sex & Beauty (Matt Ridley)
- Lord of the Flies (Aimée de Jongh)

Next book on the reading list "The Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin.

I have explored several chapters (especially the one on Hybridism), but I never read this classic cover to cover. Time to change that! 😀📚

🥳 New paper in Emu - Austral Ornithology!
www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

In this study, I review the available evidence for hybridization in ratites. Most cases are linked to human activities, suggesting that natural hybridization among ratites is exceptionally rare.

Next book on the reading list: "Song of the North Wind" by Paul A. Johnsgard. A little book about snow geese. 📚😀

Do you also have a "To Read" folder that’s basically a black hole? 🕳️

My new blog post explores why that’s okay. And how to orbit the black hole instead of getting sucked in.

✍ New blog post! Avoiding Negativity Bias in the Digital Age
jenteottenburghs.wordpress.com/2025/10/06/a...

Why do a few negative comments stick more than a hundred positive ones? That is negativity bias. I wrote a blog post about how it plays out on social media and what helps me deal with it.

It has taken me many years to develop and continually update the Avian Hybrids Project (it started in 2014).
avianhybrids.wordpress.com

The website has been a useful resource for many #ornithology colleagues, but occasionally I receive these blunt comments. 🙄

The best approach is a polite answer.

I have been running the Avian Hybrids Project for about 10 years now, attracting visitors from all over the world. Top countries are USA, UK and Canada.

However, I am still missing Western Sahara and North Korea for a complete world map...

🚨 New paper out in Polar Biology! 🐧

Do ocean currents shape patterns of penguin hybridization?
link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Overall, hybridization in penguins is shaped by a combination of abiotic (ocean currents) and biotic factors (numerical imbalances at breeding colonies).
