Scenes from this morning’s NYC Municipal Archives book sale inside the gorgeous Surrogate’s Court atrium. Building is a gem, go just for the architecture. (Yes there’s a line to get in!)

Congrats to NYC on starting down the road to a unified streets map. Took only 125+ yrs after consolidation 😉

Scanning each borough’s paper maps will be (mostly) easy, actually digitizing all the metadata would be really really hard. Here’s a close-up of what one of these paper maps looks like.

You can get your tower cranes, if you’re the city paying $3 billion for a new Brooklyn jail (~340 ft tall, # of stories seems to vary by report)

Counterpoint (sort of): this ~1910 postcard says Sunset Park is in Bay Ridge. More here: www.bklynlibrary.org/blog/2025/07...

DUMBO’s borders are fluid…but when it comes to Furman Street below Brooklyn Heights, the people have spoken

200 yrs ago OTD: Just some Brooklyn neighbors complaining in the local media about the garbage, summer smells, businesses taking over the sidewalks, potholes and never-ending construction.

City cranks never change 🤷‍♂️

DYK that NYC transit babies pre-date the subway?!
125 yrs ago, "B R T Colomba" was born in a Coney Island streetcar. Proud papa proclaimed he'd name her Beatrice Regina Teresa to match her first initials with the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company!

Lol. Even the detail map left out a name. But it had one on the 1855 map! Barber’s Alley

A few bits and ends still survive…and Fleet Alley in Dumbo even has a street sign. Though unceremoniously (and probably illegally) locked up behind a fence.

Pour one out for Downtown Brooklyn’s lost alleys… dozens of them, with intriguing names like Nutria Alley, Leech Alley, Gothic Alley, Bugbee's Alley, Mumby's Alley and on & on. Many more than Manhattan. Gradually wiped out by the bridge, elevated trains and Robert Moses.
