When I started to learn English, we spent 99% of our time on spelling (why 2 d in “address??), grammar (why no future after “when”), defining and … f*cking pronunciation!

It’s always because a language is not carved in marble, as we say here. It’s a never-ending process, made of history, addings from other cultures, and “linguistiques” spécifications. That’s the beauty of it 🙂

I’m French. I’d like to say that everything language has some weird things. I don’t know about the « flamand », but the English is so strange for example! “The police are…”, “the news is…”. And Spanish? “Agua” is feminine, but they say “el agua”???
