The US govt cannot control the TikTok algorithm, but the Chinese govt definitely can. Personally, I would prefer not to have either government controlling social media algorithms, does that make sense?

Given what the Chinese govt is doing to Uyghurs, I think they likely won’t be spreading that message. But my point here was more just to clarify the risk with TikTok—it’s not so much about your data being shared, it’s about the govt involvement in the content algos.

I think it’s less about the Chinese govt having our data and more about them having the ability to easily spread propaganda through the platform. Like if the US govt was allowed to interfere with the TikTok algo, that would be concerning, right? That’s the current case w the Chinese govt.
