"Everything else was thrown away."

"[F]eeling pushed, feeling forced, feeling like I didn't count as a person in D.C."

"Thankful he'd worn two layers of clothes, Kingery looked at his now-empty street corner with nothing but the bruises on his back."

This footnote to Illinois and Chicago's lawsuit against Trump is an important reminder:

* There is no Department of War or Secretary of War, which are make-believe names for the actual agencies created by Congress.

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

Went to the Hill yesterday to cover the shutdown. The anger from Republicans about Dems picking this healthcare fight is really interesting given the last decade.

A judge just smacked down the Trump administration’s targeting of pro-Palestinian speech, comparing it to the Red Scare.

The Reagan-appointed judge kind of went off.

Based on some of my conversations with veteran groups about the culture of military sexual violence under Hegseth, this feels deeply concerning.

Hegseth: "You should not pay for an earnest mistake for your entire career. That's why today, at my direction, we're making changes to the retention of adverse information on personnel records."

Ohhh this was significantly weirder than I thought it would be.
atrupar.com
Hegseth: "It all starts with physical fitness and appearance. If the secretary of war can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force. Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals."

A thing no one prepares you for in political journalism is the extent to which you have to ask the government questions like they're a wily trickster who can only answer if it's phrased a specific way.

Kash Patel says the suspected Texas ICE shooter "searched apps that tracked the presence of ICE agents."

DHS recently sent subpoenas to Meta for information on social media accounts that track ICE actions, on broad immigration enforcement authority grounds. Worth watching what happens here now.

The efforts to paint Blackness and Black people as somehow in opposition to the left is really fascinating to me. It provides a moral cover for centrists that is often divorced from, or a deep misinterpretation of reality.
