Again I think the music mostly comes down to OST vs. AST because the AST is vastly different and actually quite tastefully done electronic/D&B music that the NeoGeo's synths just couldn't capture that well.

I disagree. I prefer the NeoGeo aesthetics to the... lack of consistent art direction XII/XIII had (Ash vs. Clark. vs. Kyo and why does King of all characters have STICK ARMS?), and the 2001 AST kicks ass.
