I think it's very good on exploding certain types of preconceptions and assumptions that people often have, such as the idea that every society has or has had laws that restrict women. But like the link says, she ignores or elides a lot of things that are very obvious just from reading her own book.

Very good read! I liked The Invention of Women, but I had a lot of similar thoughts about the book. (I would note that whatever its other flaws, it is *very* tightly focused on Yoruba societies; I don't think she makes any claims about how anyone else did things.)

They'll probably make them recite the Pledge of Allegiance this time too. I know it wasn't the worst thing that happened, but it's a detail that has always disturbed me.
