I do think there is a genuine concern for soil health and the threat of over-fertilization (especially phosphorus which is as of now is not made at scale like nitrogen). But yes, native pollinators in the are also boring and difficult to monetize, like mason bees or flies.

The thing that really shines through in A Time of Gifts, and I think is reflected in the cave story, is of a Europe with its shared history the brink of total destruction. I guess the cultural legacy the humanities grants us can be powerful, but it alone is not powerful enough to prevent ruin.
