A re-introduction since I'll be here more regularly! I’m a writer of histfic set in ancient worlds (WIP = ancient Greece) full of twisty plots, politics, adventure & the past in dialogue with today’s issues. I’ll be posting about writing, reading, social justice and whatever else comes to mind✨️
An innovative take on vampires paired with Ethiopian lore, in IMMORTAL DARK a self-destructive girl searching for her sister attends an arcane, all-Black university to try to wrest her ancestral home from the equally ruthless, alluring vampire she's convinced is her sister's kidnapper. #JannaGReads

In WINTER HARVEST Demeter’s lingering trauma from being swallowed & growing up inside her monstrous father’s stomach leads to a dark turn of her own and for the earth when her daughter inexplicably goes missing in this complex, at times merciless Greek myth retelling by a Greek author. #JannaGReads

In no way would I have thought that a campy, Korean, sci-romance, soap opera set aboard a space station would become my newest viewing obsession yet here we are 🚀

I’ve been trying to downsize my closet since the pandemic—since I stopped needing a full-time-in-office wardrobe for my now hybrid job. But I just love my clothes too much. Some of them hold such great memories. So if I truly can’t part with any of them I’ll have to find more occasions to wear them!

I love this so much!

At the inauguration, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wore a distinctive collar adorned with cowrie shells, which are believed to offer protection from evil in African traditions.

This choice mirrors the late Justice Ginsburg’s practice of using collars to convey a message.

Powerful, brilliant and harrowing, in ACHILLES IN VIETNAM a psychotherapist and amateur classist examines the Iliad as an account of Achilles’s moral breakdown resulting from combat trauma and PTSD as compared & contrasted with the severely afflicted Vietnam veterans in his care. #JannaGReads

How has this first full week back to work felt like it's erased all the rest I got over Christmas all at once? 🫠

The way my body hurts after I exercise & hurts even more when I don’t exercise at all. Fitness is truly its own kind of curse. Once you start you can NEVER STOP 😩

Today at work we were discussing resolutions for 2025 and I mentioned how I like quarterly goals. A colleague agreed, saying this set the goals for different seasons and this kinda blew my mind. I'd always just used Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4. WinterGoals, SpringGoals, etc. is SO much more inspiring! 🌱☀️🍂❄️

Frosty, frigid (-17°C) sky over YYC Calgary Airport 🥶

Also a visual reminder to myself that planes don't (can't?) reverse on their own. They are pushed!

Started 2025 off right with a morning run, albeit in shoes that were somewhat too small—which may in fact be fully symbolic of the year ahead (hopefully in the most positive reading possible).

Last read of 2024—a Black, queer, dystopian science fantasy novella. Subtle, gritty, heart-wrenching, fascinating worldbuilding, an exploration of masculinity/male gender expectations & incredible use of language! It was important to me to end my reading year with a BIPOC author's book. #JannaGReads
