I visited Beacon Ave S and S Stevens Street this morning to understand why a street that was just rebuilt by SDOT can still have a tragedy occur.
Crossing eastbound looking south showing that people crossing cannot see northbound drivers until they start to cross. photo showing crossing eastbound looking north showing bad sight lines to southbound traffic and a right turn conflict where a driver turning right will be looking at the southbound traffic not at the crosswalk. Crossing westbound looking north shows generally ok sightlines, but at times with heavy northbound traffic, the northbound traffic would impede seeing oncoming southbound traffic. Crossing westbound looking south shows generally quite good sight lines, but shows that drivers turning do create a right turn conflict where drivers will be looking for a gap in traffic, not at the crosswalk.
