If you feel comfortable self-host, it doesn’t take much to start. I bought a cheap $75 HP mini pc and self-host as much as I can off that, and backup to an external drive. SearXNG instead of DuckDuckGo, Immich instead of G Photos, etc.
Not perfect but I have so much more peace of mind.
