Beyond the other stuff you brought up, being "into stuff that's in" is the definition of how academic markets work. Like in the 1990s, Russia specialists had a hard time finding work, while Mid East specialists became "in" after 9/11. Is it fair? No but life is not fair. It's not always about race.
