The terrible gifts thing for me is in 99% of cases book gifts are either a) exactly the book on my wishlist in which case I'd buy it anyway or b) a book slightly different to the one on my wishlist (eg wishlist "the letters of Decca Mitford", get "the letters of Deborah Mitford" - true story)

Better than about 95% of people who haven't been through one of the big consultancy training programmes, though. It's the spinning jenny for bullshitters; won't produce top end artisanal bullshit, but most people buy it by the ton.

Wait, Tony's is gentrified? I assumed it was like that Wonka Chocolate stuff. Surely G&B just proved a market which Lindt have then piled into

It's Mike Duncan's (IIRC) Dumb Guy theory of history, that Large Forces+Dumb Guys explains more than Large Forces+Great Men. Cf my "everybody looks at the wrong Bonaparte" point

THANK YOU! Much as i like GRRM, all I can say to the “it’s too sprawling and ambitious“ crowd is oh, you sweet summer child; let’s talk once you’ve set book 5 on a totally unrelated continent, eh?

Come on, 15 minutes to write down a list of near-identical names, 10 more to write an invoice, doesn’t eat much into his nap time

Yeah, I think theres an element of not being the guy who predicted 5 of the last 3 recessions or whatever the line is

All that and you use your mate’s car??
January 15, 2026 at 8:57 PM
Hahaha, I am told all my 18-year-olds socials were flooded with people outraged that they didn’t use this instead of Cowboy Junkies in the finale

On the one hand yes, on the other hand Teddy Roosevelt pretty much invaded Cuba for the 'Gram (and I'm fairly persuaded by the @patrickwyman.bsky.social argument that the same's true of the Baltic Crusades) so maybe not that much changes...?

This is part of a broader thing (cf Spain); the UK was holding the imperial potato when the music stopped

What do you mean "why is noise level bigger than emissions?"
January 7, 2026 at 2:34 PM
To be clear even we didn't have the brass neck to use that
January 7, 2026 at 2:28 PM
Hahaha, we did this in 2008. This whole piece reminds me of the "A Q400 is the greenest option for EXTMAN" study I commissioned, which may or may not have used "vs each passenger drives a BMW M5 the whole way" as a comparator

Shit, that is a 10x better version of my old joke and I'm stealing it

The US constitution is analogous to a redundant power supply - yes, it's better to have it than not, no it won't help if you plug spaghetti into the first socket and your knob into the second

Surprised Bela Tarr's estate got through probate that quick, honestly

I choose to assume this was Sonic Boom as that makes it (even) funnier
