It's the same thing with sports. If you don't grow up watching or playing American Football, you'll have a harder time getting into it. Like you'll have no idea an offensive should run the ball when the defense is showing you a light box.

Pokemon is shockingly deep. That's why getting into competitive is difficult. Abilities, move pools, speed tiers, EVing and umpteen different strategies (psyspam, sun room, weather, etc.)
