Ben killing Han Solo (though not part of the plan) would have earned Snokes trust bringing him closer to his inner circle and a major internal conflict for Ben to struggle with.

In TLJ, Rey should have joined Snoke ruining Ben & Luke's plans if they wanted to take some real risks.
