The thing about all the talk about Pete Hegseth’s sexual abuse, drinking, and organizational financial mismanagement is that it’s totally masking how completely unqualified he is to be Secretary of Defense even if those weren’t issues.

I am not a football coach, but I have to say I do not understand the Chicago Bears coaching at the end of that game.

This is incredibly disturbing and goes against every rule of war, international law, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and the very ethic of the military. A disciplined military goes to every length to prevent civilian deaths and having a SecDef who doesn't care is unacceptable.

We have choices. When Marley’s ghost informs Scrooge that “I wear the chain I forged in life,” he means that he cannot blame regressive Victorian society for the choices he made. We all need to choose to continue to participate, refuse to stay silent, refuse to cower.

On tariffs: 1. High tariffs have economic consequences. 2. Given expenditures, tariffs won't fund the federal government. Unless we diminish Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and National Defense, we need revenue. Link to a still excellent source. www.everycrsreport.com/files/200609...

This will affect all of us. But if Trump’s economic policies are carried out (higher tariffs and mass deportations, which is in effect guts entire segments of the economy of the supply of labor), even those who supported him will quickly become disillusioned.

Pete Hegseth considers himself to be at war with basically everybody to Trump’s left, and it is by no means clear that he means war metaphorically.

A repeated falsehood by Mr. Trump and his appointee to Commerce, Mr. Lutnick, is that circa 1900, most tax revenue came from tariffs. In fact, 90% of tax revenue came from excise taxes on beer and spirits. That is an interesting historical reason why Prohibitionists supported an income tax.
