I love this comparison. One way to apply discernment to AI hype is to unpack what we actually mean when we refer to “intelligence.”
Intelligence is a little like the concept of nobility, said Alison Gopnik, a psychology professor at UC Berkeley, who has pioneered techniques for studying the cognitive abilities of babies and children. Nobility is a social construct that conflates social status with positive character traits and has been used for centuries to justify the hoarding of power and wealth.
