sometimes people ask me why I don't like games like Satisfactory or Dyson Sphere Program because as an engineer those kinds of things seem like they'd be up my alley

and it's because I spend all day staring at things like this for work

a complicated heavy steel structure with lots of custom bolted connections

spent like half an hour trying to figure out how to design the connections to attach a steel brace to a structure, until I finally decided to try the structural analysis without it hoping I could just not bother

the building apparently is fine without the brace, so laziness wins in the end

well there's levels of craftsmanship besides just aesthetic beauty, like efficiency or clarity or ease of extensibility; I think that feeling you're describing is a pride in craftsmanship even if you're not hand-crafting koans

every two years we're told this is it, this is the final backstop against the collapse of democracy, we must vote like our lives depend on it, and then when Democrats win, they spend two years sitting on their hands with no sense of urgency until it's time for the next election

except we've already seen the Democrats backslide on all those things as well -- they never followed through on their promise to replace Roe v. Wade with legislation, they didn't close Guantanamo or defund ICE, they regularly bulldoze homeless camps and punish rough sleeping, etc etc etc

I think it's because they have this extremely romanticized, abstract view of rural America as where all the strong, happy farmers straight out of central casting live, because none of them have actually interacted with a person outside the managerial/lobbying class in years
