And it’s largely to him that we owe the idea that if your security is exclusively in the hands of a “well-regulated militia” of citizen volunteers, then it can never be used by the government against its own people.

I know his name isn’t popular these days, but Machiavelli was saying 500 years ago that a Republic only survives if the people are constantly vigilant and never become complacent.
