Helm was built for people who understand Kubernetes.

But for most devs, Helm charts are confusing. And that’s okay.

Helm is powerful, just not as a user interface. 🎀

For my tech friends, I wrote a walk-through tutorial about an open source tool for building dev platforms called Cyclops. Application developers deploy and manage their apps using the Cyclops UI (or CLI) and templates which are Helm charts.

It seems to me like using a GitOps approach could be overkill for testing environments
January 29, 2025 at 5:34 PM
There are two approaches to GitOps: the push and the pull approach.

Either a tool outside the cluster pushes your code to it triggered by some event.

Or it's an inside job, in which case the code is pulled from git and applied to the cluster at a regular interval.

Fun fact: when Spotify built its own Internal Developer Platform (now known as Backstage), they realized that their developers were 5% more likely to stay at the company one year later.

Platform engineer has a product at its core - the developer platform (IDP).

That is usually the line between DevOps and Platform engineers.

But what really counts as an IDP? For example, can bash scripts be considered an IDP?

Platform engineering is not a replacement for DevOps 🙅‍♂️

The goal of DevOps is to improve software quality, speed of iteration, and delivery.

Platform engineering is one of the ways to implement and manifest DevOps principles.

Platform engineering is like an internal product team.

But instead of serving external customers, the company's own developers and internal teams are its users.

The product they are building? An internal developer platform, or IDP for short!
