Writing a book on cross-cultural parallels in meditation, and to my surprise recently included a chapter on "daimons." Went on a retreat last week and realized why — I have one. Shows in ways like a distinctive little head pain when I'm trying too hard ... or when I think I know what I'm doing.

Heraclitus also had a saying about having a daimon. In the Greek it’s three words: Ethos anthropoi daimon. “Ethos” means character, or orientation, or proclivity, or outlook—in modern English it means the character or the motivating spirit of a people or of a culture. “Anthropos” means man or human being, and in this saying it’s in the grammatical dative case, so it means “for a human being” or “to a human being.” And “daimon” is sometimes translated here as “guardian spirit,” like we saw it in Socrates, but in this case it can also carry a sense of “fate” or “destiny.” So sometimes “Ethos anthropoi daimon” is translated as, “A person’s character is their fate.” But because Heraclitus paid attention to how things can be seen in more than one way, it’s my bet that he’s saying that the relationship between “ethos” and “daimon” can go in both directions. In other words, I think what Heraclitus was suggesting was this: A person’s way of being is their daimon, and their daimon is their way of being. The idea we have of ourselves can effectively be our fate. It can shape our destiny. Such an idea can be a guiding force. And that can be beneficial. Or it can be not so beneficial. This is another way to think about a daimon. Our way of being in the world. A daimon can be something which gives our life its orientation. It can shape how we see things. It can be a motivating framework for how we understand ourselves and our world.
