Got to disagree with on that one good buddy. 38 years of friendship with you has been one of the better decisions in my life.

Agree. Risks too with all the trucks hauling sulfuric acid to and from the refinery.

Fortunately, Chevron doesn't use HF. In SoCal, only Torrance Refinery and Valero use HF. If there was an accident, terrorist attack, or earthquake that released HF at Torrance or Valero, the consequences could be horrendous.

Those "multiple fires" were likely flares burning off product in the system. That's what they're supposed to do. The Isomax unit exploded and burned. May have been lucky that the storage tanks didn't catch fire. Need a U.S. Chemical Safety Board investigation, but Trump is trying to defund them.

I live in Hollyglen near the park. I used to live on Arena. When I lived their during the Northridge earthquake, I got a great view of the whole sky lighting up as the refinery flares blew out everything in the system, which was exactly what they were supposed to do. No Boardroom brewery then. 😞

Unfortunately for us, refineries and the nearby Los Angeles Air Force Base are probably high on the target list for nuclear weapon attacks if a war breaks out. Probably LAX too.

The public can file complaints about the incident on the @southcoastaqmd.bsky.social web site, xappp.aqmd.gov/complaints/N.... Complaints may be used to issue Notices of Violation (NOVs) for violating the district's public nuisance regulation and other rules. NOVs may result in fines and orders.

The explosion and fire have been reported to be located at the Isomax unit, which the refinery uses for fuel distillation and cracking, part of the process of converting oil to gasoline, diesel, and other products.

The 5-minute averages of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions peaked at 541.53 parts per billion at 11 p.m. at a monitoring location on the east border of the facility. Black carbon readings were slightly elevated, but local PM2.5 low-cost sensor readings didn't show much, if any, impact.

Several years ago @southcoastaqmd.bsky.social adopted a regulation (Rule 1180) that requires the refinery to monitor air quality at their fence line and post data on a website. You can see the data at elsegundo1180.com. 🧵

Chevron refinery in El Segundo exploded and burned last night. Here's the view from my house. Some things to know. 🧵

I'm headed off to Quebec City. I need to learn these very quickly. Tabarnak?

Great CA end-of-session recap by @merriangb.bsky.social from @nrdc.org in case you wanted to know. What looked like a quiet year on the clean air and climate protection front turned very busy during the last days before the Legislature adjourned. www.nrdc.org/bio/merrian-...
California’s End-of-Session Blitz Is a Ray of Sunshine for Climate Progress
The California legislature passes a package of climate action bills as the Trump administration backslides on federal commitments.

California's electricity bills are rising, not because of clean energy, but because of how fixed costs are included in rates. Great post from Meredith Fowlie on the problem and potential policy levers: energyathaas.wordpress.com/2025/09/15/r...

Is it 100% on the crew or could the crane operator share any responsibility for not communicating clearly what they were doing? I saw other footage showing the ship emission capture and control mechanism releasing from the exhaust stack exactly how they're designed to do during emergencies.
