This was my pinned image on the other site for two years, following the death of Godard, and it still captures who I am and what I care about more than anything else so it’s here too. For posterity.

Hosting a special 35mm adults only screening of THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS at @plazaatlanta.bsky.social on October 20th while I'm in town!

This is a wild, seasonably appropriate, and very fun adult film to see with a crowd. Come out if you can!

Ken Jacobs was the first experimental filmmaker whose work I understood. Not necessarily because the work itself was more accessible but because he presented it as something that was for everyone and could be made by anyone. He, in various ways, democratized the avant garde in a way nobody else had.

And I say this not as someone who wants to target Taylor, but as a fan who has watched these changes coming pretty rapidly. I bought the record, didn’t see the bullshit “movie” this weekend, but something about this album’s cycle feels especially off to me and this is just a part of it.

When will people realize that billionaires do not care about us, even if they want to appear to. Taylor is in a position to hire as many human artists as she pleases and is the rare creator that’s as in control of her art/product and its marketing as anyone ever has been, yet she chose AI.

“Through his attention to performance and his unconventional method of editing, Jaglom meticulously created a style that doesn’t seem meticulous at all — he actually achieved what Hollywood always strives for, a purely invisible technique.”

So far, most consistently great lineup in years. A lot of bangers in this slate and I still have a half dozen screenings this coming week to go.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER in 70mm IMAX at AMC Lincoln Square is the most in awe of a film presentation I have been in some time, with the picture filling that 75 foot tall screen throughout. And maybe the first sold out public screening in ages where I didn’t see a single phone, just people in it.

I launched a new film journal last month and have not been great about promoting it. This has been a big passion project for me and is intended to release quarterly, with new essays, interviews and cartoons.

The first issue is on sale now for $10 and any support would mean a lot!

Honored to have gotten to work with Henry, even if only remotely, over the past couple of years in a mission to restore many of his films. His work is singular, even compared to many of his freewheeling New Hollywood contemporaries, and he kept at it for so long.

One of the greats, truly. RIP.

But the average American is also not writing an article like this, I feel like the comparison would be other critics and/or people in the industry.

In an era with movie theater subscriptions it feels low, but this is also written by someone who is arguably doing this professionally and I’d say that majority of professional film critics have seen a lot more by this point in the year.

Not sure if the barometer is just really low these days, but 65 nearly 3/4 through the year is hardly the flex that this headline makes it out to be. But I’ll take BLACK BAG love where I can get it.
