don’t insult me, don’t say things that aren’t true, and learn how the name is linked to the very founding of the city

also learn how apostrophes work

“We don’t have Church’s Chicken here, but that’s a boat ride away.”

Here’s my story on Nanaimo being second best in Canada on one of those world city ranking things, the issues with the ranking, and how Vancouver is sort of obsessed with this stuff, for better or worse.

A silly data story I did with @ianhanomansing.bsky.social yesterday: the tyranny of the Braydens in Canadian junior hockey will soon come to an end.

Here's data showing that a very particular style of name clearly peaked about 15 years ago.

and all of those designers get hired by bc municipalities to redesign their town logos

Another example from today of "we have a framework where Vancouver is getting worse all the time".

You'd never guess which city ranked 4th in Canada, and which one ranked 8th.
January 13, 2026 at 9:53 PM
folks, if I show a chart showing less people are dying and a table showing that a media story was flawed, and you say "I won't believe you until you inspire me with a custom research paper", then I'm gonna block because the pandemic showed me that playing the "do this chart" game isn't worth my time
January 12, 2026 at 8:42 PM
And you could say "that's just a 10-year average, and doesn't actually answer whether things are getting safer in Vancouver."

Except they are.

Traffic related fatalities have been on a downward trend for decades, and since 2011 they've gone down fastest for pedestrians and cyclists.
January 12, 2026 at 7:12 PM
Here's the data where that study came from.

It *only* measures the 10 biggest cities in Canada.

(except Brampton for some reason)

Based on the data provided, Vancouver is actually the least dangerous city in Canada for cyclists and pedestrians.

You would have had no idea.

Gonna highlight another example of how you can think things are bad or getting worse when the opposite is probably true.

Here's a story framed a certain way last year while I was still on vacation.

Takeaway: "the province is a dangerous place for pedestrians and cyclists."

But is it true?
January 12, 2026 at 7:01 PM
again, fascinated at some of the hostile reaction of people reading the fairly straightforward sentence "compared to two years ago, housing is cheaper and less people are being assaulted or dying from drugs"
January 10, 2026 at 9:13 PM
For a decade, home prices, rent prices, assaults and overdose deaths generally went up in Vancouver, at a fairly rapid rate.

But that's no longer the case, and it's an overall trendline that's really worth monitoring.

That’s not what “epicentre” means.

Vancouver is hosting 7 of the 104 games, none after the round of 16.

It will be a big thing.

There will likely be a lot of bigger things happening.

I spoke with Yuri Fulmer, the first major entrant in the B.C. Conservative Party leadership race.

It's pretty clear he wants to be the candidate for members that care much more about affordability than social issues — but will that be enough?

The algorithm fed me hidden gem pablum about Burnaby’s (very fun!) heritage village, and people are roasting the poster for calling it part of Vancouver for the clicks, and honestly I love people’s commitment to being pedantic about regional boundaries
January 6, 2026 at 6:38 AM
did this happen? no

did this person admit he was wrong after I called him out on it? also no

are big changes based on how much/little value changes relative to similar nearby properties, since cities determine rates separate from assessments? yes

do people fear monger for clicks? absolutely
