Russia has Ukraine on its border. There's not a choice.
I'm not trying to read Putins mind. It doesn't make sense that he would want to conquer Ukraine, just the areas occupied by native Russians that Ukraine were oppressing.

NATO states with a border with Russia grew from 1 to 4, between 1949 and 2022.
It's been a strategy in the past for there to be "buffer" states in between 2 powers who are at odds to minimise risk of conflict.
An ever widening NATO border with Russia increases the risk of a wider conflict.

If NATO had refrained from expansionism, and if Ukraine would have not tried to bomb its Russian citizens into the stone age (dombas), perhaps Russia might not have invaded.
The war really began with the US coup that installed Zellenski.
