Although lots of intelligent people were involved in drafting the North Atlantic Treaty, did they even consider the possibility of one member attacking another? Or could the US be immediately thrown out by some process?

Many cases like this aren't necessarily that the person isn't bright, but that they THINK they're a lot brighter than they really are.

When someone lacking in the fundamental skills and judgement required of a job gets promoted to such a high position, it's doubtful such a display of incompetence will endanger the position. It's loyalty not competence that they reward.

Most even mid-sized cities when I was a kid from the 60s into the 70s had a brown haze floating above them. We forget how well collective action can genuinely solve serious problems which affect us all.
