Please let excuse my ignorance (not a neuroscientist), but what is meant by oscillate in this context? Is it local morphology change, movement, alternative signalling or something else?

Isn't the other issue that the US prison industry is built around having access to cheap labour?

It's not about punishment and rehabilitation, it's about profit from a captured workforce.

As such, they will lobby hard to prevent anything that messes with their workforce numbers.

I have heard "dead internet theory", but is there a better name for this digital solipsism?

i guess people are becoming more confident of things not changing dramatically in the short term, whereas earlier they had no idea if the rapid releases and step advances would accelerate.

Note - I don't have any magical insight. I spent 10 years working on AGI before we had transformers, and I know it's hard. Yet it's even harder when society gets fed up with AI future promises being broken and makes funding dry up.

Sorry all, we aimed but missed - it's only getting further away from now. And gets further away the more money is pumped into the LLM/transformer bubble.

AI winter and boom follows orbital mechanics, you miss and you slingshot out, but eventually you get another go.

For historical reference, in 2000, the estimate was ~20 years on average, amongst people on AGI/SL4/transhumanist lists. So perhaps it's a parabola law.

yeah, and sometimes your job is to ship, not just endlessly mess around with tooling.

For extra spite, I hope it's homogeneous

define napkin as world space coordinates, then flip Y axis.
November 15, 2025 at 8:57 PM
Yeah, as someone who went from science PhD to computing and ML, our ability to accurately control and sample reality is the limitation.

And while my career has been "successful", I somewhat regret it. Too many brains have been sucked into algorithms vs hard science.

Which isn't to say LLM slop has good aesthetic, but hiding the process isn't unusual to craftsmanship.
November 15, 2025 at 5:30 PM
When doing woodwork and building things we often attempt to hide nail holes and screw heads, as well hide other parts of the process.

The aesthetic of the end result is important, not the construction method.
