An (updated) Bluesky intro: I work in the intersection of history, sociology, and IR, thinking about empire, law, revolution, and int'l theory. My first book is on the Caribbean in the age of revolutions, new research is on protests and policing in Hong Kong and history of int'l order in the Pacific

There are all sorts of problems associated with the way humanitarian and development aid has functioned historically. One can acknowledge this and be critical of it, while also acknowledging that removing that aid entirely will have apocalyptic consequences for the most vulnerable people globally.

"Myanmar, where the UN estimates 40% of the population needs humanitarian assistance and which once counted the US as its largest humanitarian donor. Now ... it has become the epicenter of the suffering unleashed upon the world’s most vulnerable by President Trump’s dismantling of USAID."
Starving children screaming for food as US aid cuts unleash devastation and death across Myanmar
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has repeatedly said “no one has died" because of his government’s decision to gut its foreign aid program.

NEW: I spoke to clergy and faith leaders who've joined protests at the Chicago-area ICE facility.

Three say they've been shot with pepper balls, sometimes while praying.

All say ICE is also violating their religious freedom, and one is arguing it in court. religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...

(RNS) — Despite potential danger, religious leaders and faith activists have been a visible presence at Chicago-area ICE protests, some waving signs with slogans such as ‘Love thy neighbor’ and ‘Who w...

I'm sure you're right and that's what he meant, it just seems bizarre to apply that to Rong. The self-absorbedness of a certain kind of European leftism.

A great teaching week. Discussed American, French, and Haitian revolutions with first-year undergrads on Monday and the Qing Empire with advanced undergrads yesterday. The students were engaged and genuinely interested in the topics. Which is a relief, since everything else is just the worst.

Seriously fuck the Myanmar Junta, attacking a vigil during a festival (and not for the 1st time) in Bon To Village, killing 32 & injuring 50.

The Junta needs to be removed root & branch from Myanmar & the people's of Myanmar desperately need help as the attacks escalate & even more get displaced.

"I welcome their hatred" is exactly the right quote to pull for this situation.

"This case…squarely presents the issue whether non-citizens lawfully present here in United States actually have the same free speech rights as the rest of us.

The Court answers this Constitutional question unequivocally “yes, they do.”"

OMG this William G. Young opinion that just dropped (12:30pm) in AAUP v. Rubio.
It begins with a postcard sent to Chambers and Young's reply

card: "Trump has pardons and tanks, what do you have?"

WGY: "We the People of the United States — you and me — have our magnificent Constitution"

Given the general state of the world, and the specific state of British academia, it feels good to be back in a classroom teaching today.

I'm obviously being hyperbolic, but it seems clear that the Labour leadership is eager to adopt a Reform-lite approach to immigration policy. As pointed out by many, many people, including people within the party.

Oh. And I guess some folks might vote for the Tories, though I'm not sure why at this point.

British voters now have two major parties to choose between, both of which base their platforms mostly on disliking foreigners and locking up (certain kinds of) protesters. The main difference seems to be that one party has a red rose in their logo, for some reason.
