You do always get standard first class meal in this case, you just lose the ability to pre-order something different or secure your choice. I don't think they will keep your econ pre-order when upgrading (though I've never tried) because the menus are different

I'm not very happy with Alaska in terms of food offerings when upgrading. They don't clear Gold upgrades often until 20hr or less before, but preorder closes 24hr before. So you are stuck with standard food when getting upgraded

Also, I don't think Alaska name still captures the essence of the airline and the value it represents. At least the corporate side should consider renaming to something like Pacific & Northwest Airlines
