As slick and resourced as some rightward groups are, they could compete extraordinarily well in many competitions just by showing up. It’s just easier for them to pass the hat than apply. Still confused about that assertion and wonder how much simplifying grants—a good thing—is for reviewers.

That August EO on grantmaking was buried in some of the most inflammatory language of the admin but indicated how much they’ve struggled to do the work. It also signals a belief far-right groups are shut out when they don’t seek grant dollars.

Something I spend a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to fix is how much mainstream political press don’t understand the money side of government. Because the admin largely has failed to operate a key policy lever for its agenda because they have Heritage folks who’re scared of money.

Weiss’ whole thing is “comforting the comfortable,” and very few folks with that mindset in press have the chops to do the work worth a damn. That sort of runs hand in hand.
