This past semester was the most stressful of my academic career. I had 180 students and about half cheated at some point in the semester

They submit weekly reflections where the questions are opinion-based, graded only on effort, don't care about grammar

SO MANY students submitted ChatGPT essays

It should be fun for passersby to compare this Chicago garage repair contractor's flyer with the variation above it that uses nearly identical layout to insult ICE agents. You can get the file to print the top flyer and others here: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
Two flyers with green text on a white background. The top flyer is a message to ICE about how horrible they are. The bottom flyer has most of the same design elements, images, and text style but is about garage door repair and garage construction as well as other services. The flyers are taped to the inside of a garage in Chicago.

Pritzker: "It's unconscionable. This has never happened before. They're calling out troops onto the streets of a state that doesn't want them and they're not even telling us where they're gonna go, what they're gonna do. This hasn't happened I don't think since the Civil War."

Communities have more power than they think

Research on Walmart found that they avoided opening in towns where there were protests (Ingram, Yue, & Rao, 2010). And goldmines with community opposition are worth less (Henisz, Dorobantu, & Nartey, 2014)

Long story short - data centers can be stopped

I think the governors and mayors are trying to avoid having law enforcement arrest ICE agents because that seems like a pretty quick path to the insurrection act and martial law, perhaps even civil war. It seems like Trump is trying to call their bluff and instigate violence

ICE shot a pastor in the head with pepper balls in Broadview, 20 min west of downtown Chicago. If the National Guard is going to be forced upon us, they should be protecting the people from ICE - not vice versa

I scrolled through their sample. Having served on a board, it just looks like a normal board slide deck in scroll format. I don't get what their revolutionary change is. Besides the cheesy movie quotes

Support for their pitch is a Wedding Crashers quote. They're big serious

It looks like the Illinois National Guard is already in the process of being federalized and deployed. I'm not sure Pritzker could then also deploy Illinois Nat Guard if that's finalized

We don't want this. We don't need this.

This summer was the safest in Chicago since 1965. Violent crime is down 23% from last year

If ICE is unsafe here, it's because they're murdering people & terrorizing communities

This is an invasion - the Texas Nat Guard is becoming Trump's personal army
Twitter post by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on October 5th. Original post included a retweet of a post by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. Pritzker's post:

"This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate."

Abbott's post:

"I fully authorized the President to call up 400 members of the Texas National Guard to ensure safety for federal officials.

You can either fully enforce protection for federal employees or get out of the way and let Texas Guard do it.

No Guard can match the training, skill, and expertise of the Texas National Guard.

They defend our country with pride.

America must also know that Texas still has thousands of National Guard assisting with the Border security." From CBS News:

"Members of the Texas National Guard are expected to begin their assignments in Chicago as soon as Wednesday, after receiving an operational brief, ahead of a federal court hearing on Thursday on a lawsuit filed by the state of Illinois and city of Chicago, which are seeking to block the troop deployment."

Wells Fargo also engages in shady lobbying practices. I use Open Secrets to investigate corporate use of the revolving door with my students, & this is one of the highest levels I've seen

70% of their lobbyists in 2024 went through the revolving door

Some of their lobbyists' past employers in pic
Open Secrets' data on Wells Fargo's use of the revolving door

In 2024, they spent $4,550,000 on lobbying

30 out of 43 wells fargo lobbyists in 2024 have previously held government jobs (69.77%) Sample list of some of the organizations that wells fargo lobbyists have worked for:

If you thought Wells Fargo changed after their 2016 fraud scandal, you may be surprised to learn that they continue to be an absolutely 💩 company

* Dropped climate goals

* Ended senior-level diversity hiring policy

* Schemed to privatize USPS

* Union busting

* Financing genocide & deportations

Most of my posts on Gaza & Palestinians are historically ignored, unless it's in the context of "western" people - like protests or the flotilla

I'm grateful for Greta's actions to shine a light on the genocide and to actually try and do something about it - but I wish people listened to her words

It's been 2 years of Israel's war on Palestinians - a genocide. But it's Greta Thunberg who is trending, and she absolutely would not want that

We should be elevating Palestinian voices, the events in Gaza, how we can help, what we should be doing

Thread 🧵

Two years have passed since Israel launched its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Here’s the scale of devastation by the numbers ⤵️

This article has a good discussion of the true number killed in Gaza - we can't know exactly because of bodies trapped under rubble and the destruction or damage of 34 hospitals

Most estimates from earlier this year range from 120,000 to >200,000. And that number could be much higher from famine

It's been two years

In that time, Israel has likely killed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, directly through bombs & bullets, or indirectly through disease and fammine. Many of those deaths are babies and children

At least 169,000 have been injured. One group warns 10 kids a day lose limbs
