Edgar Neufeld, who has died aged 92, was a Jewish refugee from the Nazis who did his PhD here before pursuing an illustrious career at IBM and working in education and social justice. He was here when we tracked the carrier rocket of Sputnik 1 in October 1957. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

✨ On this day 68 years ago (4 October), the Soviet Union launched #Sputnik 1: the world’s first artificial satellite. Orbiting Earth approx. every 98 minutes, it marked a pivotal moment in the Space Race and a defining chapter in the history of Jodrell Bank.

☄️The #Perseids are at their peak, and tonight (12 August) from midnight to dawn is one of the best times to catch them!

Meteor showers are named after the constellation they appear to originate from, in this case Perseus, visible in the north-eastern sky from Manchester.

Today we went to the astonishing Lovell Quinta Arboretum at Swettenham in Cheshire. Created by Sir Bernard Lovell of @jodrellbank.bsky.social fame. Fabulous collection of trees, and so quiet. Highly recommended (there’s a nice pub as well). lovellquintaarboretum.co.uk Highly highly recommended!
