@ DC journalists and activists: Department of the Interior, at the request of MPD, has decided to shut down Dupont Circle from Thursday to Monday.
At the request of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, with the concurrence of the United States Park Police, the National Park Service will temporarily close Dupont Circle park this weekend, beginning Thursday, June 5 to Monday, June 9, as a public safety measure and to protect park resources during World Pride celebrations. This decision was made based on a history and pattern of destructive and disorderly behavior from unpermitted activities happening in the park during past DC Pride weekends, including vandalism in 2023 that resulted in approximately $175,000 in damage to the historic Dupont Circle fountain.

We recognize that World Pride is a significant event, and we are committed to supporting a safe celebration for all. We ask for the public’s cooperation and understanding as we take this necessary step to keep the community and visitors safe and protect one of D.C.’s most treasured public spaces. This action is also consistent with Secretary Burgum’s directive to fully implement President Trump’s Executive Order on Protecting American Monuments, Memorials, and Statues, and Combating Recent Criminal Violence. That order calls for federal agencies to take proactive steps to protect historic and cultural resources on public lands, particularly where there is a demonstrated risk of damage or unlawful activity. The temporary closure and fencing of Dupont Circle Park are preventive measures aligned with that mandate to ensure the safety of both the public and park infrastructure.

The federal government says that at the request of DC MPD, Dupont Circle will be closed during Pride Weekend.

Surely MPD's beef with unauthorized celebration can be addressed by something short of closure?

It'd be like NYC cordoning off Stonewall or SF blocking off the Castro.

Good morning from the new Trader Joe's Trader Joe's opening in Edgewood today near Brookland metro station.

ANC5F, especially @aru.io , worked hard to get this grocery store open with licenses approved in record time.

The line started forming at 6:30 for the 9am opening!

Good weather means street repavings and patching are happening all over.

Please pay attention to no parking signs so crews can get in and get the job done without having to stand around waiting for the tow truck to take your car away

It was once known as Dave Thomas Circle. A year ago we started on a project to realign the intersection, expand pedestrian and bike facilities, and improve sight lines and safety. Mini parks, crosswalks, and seating.

Construction is wrapping up, here are some photos.

At today's @wmata.com oversight hearing, @wmatagm.bsky.social mentions a May initial rollout for Metro Tap & Go: enabling customers to use credit or debit cards directly on the faregate, removing the friction of purchasing fares at the machine.

Councilmember Parker @cmzparker5.bsky.social raised the issue of cars ending up on the Metropolitan Branch Trail at today's DDOT oversight hearing. He pressed for action to harden bollards and space planters to prevent automobile entry onto the MBT.

I look forward to hearing DDOT's plans!

I testified at DC Department of Public Works (DPW)'s oversight hearing on the issue of snow removal of the Bryant Street pedestrian bridge (or lack thereof), and the need for a memorandum of understanding between DPW and private parties on either side to facilitate it.
