I'm old enough to remember when that movie Crumb came out and everyone watched it and then were just like, depressed for a week. If you ever want to just feel like garbage, watch that movie.

Don't get me wrong, it's great. But it's friggin bleak.

He's going to Walter Reed to meet the troops and maybe, you know, do some other stuff. Nothing really. It's the troops plus possibly other stuff, but like, regular stuff. Not dying stuff. Just like, standard super old guy who eats McDonalds every day and has been visibly rotting kinda stuff.

Both because it's gendered and also because I'm appalled by everything so much of the time, but I don't have to share it.

I'm gonna be more positive. Not for flowery self-help reasons, but just because it's exhausting.

Also, every time I've written a character based on myself, it's been a woman. It just works out that way. All of the characters that I actually care about in my books are women.

I don't know what to do with that. I don't know why I am that way. I just relate to women so much better.

I gotta tell you something.

I'm pretty comfortable with my gender identity. Yes, I feel like it's boring, but it is what it is, and I'm cool with it. I have no pressing need to be in a different body.

She's kind of aspirational for me. I basically based Charlie on myself, and I hope that I can be as dedicated to getting back up as she is, even when she's battling depression and anxiety.

Charlie is always trying to be the best version of herself and so often fails. She desperately wants to be taken seriously. She wants to be impressive, but is stuck in the body of a teenage girl, and that makes it difficult. I that quality is endearing, and I love her for it.
