I grew up in Maine and have had the exact same experience with the descendants of french canadians. Some of the most pro-trump, anti-immigrant voters. There ancestors were hated by the anglo-protestant people in Maine.

This is the thing I have been most worried about in the era of Trump. It is insane that we as a country gave him this power.

I think this is exactly right and it is maddening. I reached out to my state legislator asking her (Democrat as am I) to support a law allowing traffic cameras at red lights and was told it was a privacy issue.

I think Professor Martin West at Harvard did research on holding back 3rd graders. I think the findings included that this reduced high school retention without increasing the risk of dropouts or not graduating high school. Paired w/changes to instruction can boost literacy.

Some folks working on early literacy are also focusing on building background knowledge. If schools switch to science of reading and building background knowledge, my hope is that the impact can last longer.

Honestly, for me, a part of becoming middle aged has been finally admitting to myself that all of these movies just aren't as good as I want to pretend they are.

Thanks for your response. My impression has always been that we (the US) gives more total aid but smaller as a percent of GDP. I could be wrong about that.

When I was in HS I needed a signature from my driving instructor. As I walked out of school I saw him drive by. My history teacher happened to be sitting in his car right there. I jumped in the passenger seat and said follow that car. He did. And I got the signature.

I keep thinking about this thread. It gets at something I have been really worried about. And I think it points to the fact that there is no going back to what was. We will continue on our current path or find a new (hopefully better) one.

I also think about vigilante movies (Reacher, the punisher, etc..). No one imagines the possibility of the the vigilante getting it wrong. Punishing an innocent person and not the guilty.
